The Edmund Cardinal Szoka Library is the graduate and undergraduate library for Sacred Heart Major Seminary. SHMS is a Roman Catholic Seminary that primarily prepares candidates for the Roman Catholic priesthood and further, prepares men and women for the diaconate, lay ministry, and other leadership roles. Located in the heart of Detroit, the Cardinal Szoka Library is designed specifically to meet the needs of the SHMS curriculum. The Library also serves an extended community of clergy, parishes, archdiocesan staff (Archdiocese of Detroit) and religious scholars throughout Michigan and beyond via a paid membership service.
The Library is named in honor of former archbishop of Detroit, His Eminence Edmund Cardinal Szoka. On October 15, 1997, Cardinal Szoka was appointed by His Holiness Pope John Paul II to a five-year term as the President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State.
Cardinal Szoka continues to look to Detroit as his home and maintains a permanent residence at the seminary. He visits the seminary annually, and has utilized the library's many collections.
